Tony Armstrong, president and CEO of the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp., will participate in two events at the Global Corporate Venturing Symposium, May 22-23 in London.
“I am excited to speak to an international audience about IU and its strengths in building an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship at its campuses,” Armstrong said. “There are several long-standing initiatives that will be of interest to attendees, and I look forward to learning about best practices around the world.”
Armstrong will participate in the invitation-only Global University Venturing Leadership Society meeting on May 22, speaking about IU’s venture and startup initiatives. A debate will follow, based on the theme “If research and teaching remain the main pillars for university funding, how do startups and venture funding become strategic rather than just tactical to support them and/or provide a third pillar?”
On May 23, Armstrong will appear on a panel titled “GUV Fusion: Corporate-university incubation.” Karen Brooks of SETsquared Partnership and Christine Gulbranson of the University of California will join him on the panel. Ali Amin of UBI Global is the moderator.
Indiana University was named a finalist in the “Tech Transfer Unit of the Year” category of the Global University Venturing Awards. Other finalists include Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Oxford. IURTC had managed IU’s technology transfer process — vetting intellectual property, applying for protection, marketing and licensing — until July 2017. Those duties are still managed by the same personnel, who were reorganized into the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office.
