Today, U.S. Navy Commander Jesse J. Zimbauer and Master Chief Petty Officer Lafrederick O. Herring of the new USS Indiana nuclear submarine visited the university’s display of the World War II battleship USS Indiana at Memorial Stadium. They spoke about the progress of the submarine, its christening ceremony scheduled for April 2017 and its expected commissioning in 2018.
Innovate Indiana sponsored a reception for Zimbauer and Herring at the Varsity Club Suite immediately after. Other speakers included Ray Shearer, chairman of the USS Indiana Commissioning Committee, and Kirk R. White, assistant vice president for strategic partnerships, Office of the Vice President for Engagement, Indiana University.
In addition to honoring Indiana’s namesake ships, IU has several educational and research partnerships with the Navy that include STEM education initiatives, educational partnership agreements and a cybersecurity-intensive cooperative research and development agreement with NSWC Crane.
