When Reuters News launched its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most innovative universities in 2015, Indiana University managed to squeeze into the upper half, ranked 49th overall and 33rd among U.S. universities. Not too shabby from any perspective.
Then this year’s list came out Wednesday. And IU moved up 12 more spots to No. 37 globally — and up to 25th nationwide. If that news isn’t quite good enough — then consider that IU is one of ten schools within the Big Ten Academic Alliance that placed within the Reuters 100 list.
In other words, out of 46 U.S. universities to make the Reuters 100, nearly a quarter hail from Big Ten institutions.
“This latest recognition from Reuters confirms our standing as an economic powerhouse in Indiana, and it indicates the increasing success we have had in transforming the lives of people here and around the world,” said IU President Michael A. McRobbie.
Even more good news may be in the offing for 2017. While this year’s study examined patent and publishing data between 2009 and 2014, the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. generated record numbers in 2015-16 for domestic patents issued (53) and had 165 U.S. and global patents in all.
Given such performance, we may see IU climb even higher in Reuters’ 2017 list. But for now, enjoy the 2016 results — and offer a bit of congratulations to the researchers, scientists and inventors at IU whose innovations made it possible.
