A group of U.S. army warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) will complete a three-week training program Friday at IU Bloomington that focused on national security, strategic planning and crisis management issues.
Known as the IU-IDB Strategic Studies Fellows Program, the course was offered through a partnership with the Institute for Defense and Business that included IU’s School of Global and International Studies and the Kelley School of Business. It is a graduate-level seminar focused on providing leadership skills to better understand — from a non-military point of view — the foundations of national security and decision-making, cybersecurity, strategy and communications.
Sessions presented focused on such issues as biological weapons, U.S.-Russia relations, climate change and counterterrorism strategy, the complex geopolitical situation in the South China Sea and the emergence of the Islamic state in the Middle East.
Session presenters included former congressman and current School of Global and International Studies Distinguished Scholar Lee Hamilton, Kelley School of Business Dean Idie Kesner and Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for information technology and chief information officer.
