Dr. David Wilkes, who recently became dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine after serving as former associate vice president for research and executive associate dean for research affairs at Indiana University School of Medicine, is one of the latest recipients of the President’s Medal of Excellence at IU.
The President’s Medal is the highest award that an Indiana University president can bestow. It recognizes distinction in public service, service to the university and extraordinary merit and achievement in the arts, humanities, sciences, education or industry.
Wilkes is a pulmonologist who focuses on the immunobiology of lung transplants. He is an expert on sarcoidosis — a chronic inflammatory disease that affects lungs — and interstitial lung diseases.
He has co-authored more than 100 research papers, holds six U.S. patents and co-founded the Indianapolis startup ImmuneWorks, which researches and develops treatments for immune-mediated lung diseases that include lung-transplant rejection and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
