Five companies founded through the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp’s Spin Up program have moved to the next round of the fourth-annual BioCrossroads New Venture Competition.
Finalists in the competition are expected to be announced later this month, with the winners revealed Oct. 14 in conjunction with the 12th annual Indiana Life Sciences Summit to be held at the JW Marriott hotel in Indianapolis. Last year’s competition was won by another Spin Up company, Anagin LLC, which was launched in 2013 by IU scientists Anantha Shekhar and Yvonne Lai to develop a first-of-its-kind treatment to battle post-traumatic stress disorder.
All five Spin Up companies that entered this year’s contest advanced to the next round, Spin Up manager Joe Trebley said. Those companies are:
- Arrhythmotech: Co-founded in 2012 by Dr. Peng-Sheng Chen and Shein-Fong Lin to develop a non-invasive technology to monitor both sympathetic nerve activity and electrocardiogram signals;
- Auricyte: Co-founded in 2014 by Karl Koehler, Eri Hashino and Gerry Oxford to treat hearing loss with a regenerative technology that guides human stem cells into functional hearing cells;
- EmotEd: Founded in 2012 by Dawn Neumann to treats emotional deficits linked to brain injuries through the use of interactive video technologies;
- Emphymab: Founded in 2011 and directed by Brian Johnstone, Dr. Irina Petrache and Matthias Clauss to treat emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
- YC Bioelectric: Co-founded in 2012 by Hiroki Yokota and Stanley Yung-Ping Chien to develop a faster, more accurate and less costly way to perform the Western blot lab technique.
The Spin Up program aids companies with promising technologies in their early stages of development. BioCrossroads is a public-private initiative to grow the life sciences industry in Indiana by supporting the research efforts, corporate initiatives and new business development.
