Spin Up company Auricyte LLC, which looks to cure hearing loss by transforming human stem cells into functioning hearing cells, is one of five companies that will be recognized Thursday as being among the Best in Show at the recent Innovation Showcase 2015 held in Speedway.
The company was co-founded in 2014 by IU School of Medicine researchers Karl Koehler, Eri Hashino and Gerry Oxford. Koehler and Hashino have pioneered research into “ear-in-a-dish” technology, first growing inner ear cells from a mouse from stem cells in 3-D cultures. Auricyte currently holds the only patent pending for developing human stem cells into functioning hearing cells, with research and development of its 3D Ear platform expected to take about three years to complete.
