At Indiana University, the contributions of international students enrich the campus community, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and cultures. To honor these contributions, IU created the Global Citizen Scholarship, a prestigious award recognizing the unique perspectives and journeys of international students. This one-time $7,500 scholarship is awarded to three outstanding students each year during International Education Week.
For the 2024 scholarship, applicants reflected on the theme “What Being an International Student at IU Means to Me.” Through video submissions students shared their personal stories, community experiences, and creative expressions. This year’s winners, chosen from a pool of remarkable candidates, represent a range of disciplines, backgrounds, and inspirations. Meet Ahmed Tahsin Shams, Maria Garcia de Casasola, and Pauline Heo, the exceptional winners of this year’s Global Citizen Scholarship.
Meet the Winners:
Ahmed Tahsin Shams
Ahmed Tahsin Shams, a Ph.D. student in the Media School, is exploring the intersection of cinema studies and the Anthropocene. A first-generation graduate student from Bangladesh, Ahmed viewed the Global Citizen Scholarship as a chance to connect his personal journey with his academic aspirations.
“For me, this scholarship wasn’t just an opportunity; it was a lifeline,” Ahmed shared. In his video submission, he highlighted the importance of community as a cornerstone of his growth. “It takes a village,” he said, reflecting on how both his home in Bangladesh and the IU community shaped his path.
Ahmed’s video was a visual and emotional journey, layering past and present through projections and breaking the fourth wall as a narrator. “The process taught me gratitude isn’t just a sentiment—it’s an obligation to honor those who shaped my path.” Winning the scholarship validated his journey and his role as a global citizen. His advice to prospective students? “Bring your culture, your stories, and your intellectual curiosity. IU is a place where your roots and wings can coexist.”
Maria Garcia de Casasola
An exchange student from Spain, Maria Garcia de Casasola is studying Business Management and Law. Her decision to apply for the scholarship stemmed from a love for IU and a desire to express her gratitude for the welcoming community she found here.
Maria’s video captured the essence of her journey—adapting to American culture, participating in sports, and immersing herself in campus life. “Bloomington has been a safe and welcoming space where I’ve learned and experienced so many new things,” she said.
The video-making process was a learning curve for her as she had minimal technical experience. Despite initial challenges, she found joy in filming around campus and piecing together transitions. Winning the scholarship was a proud moment for her, not only as financial relief for her family but also as recognition of her efforts. To future students, Maria offers encouragement: “IU is a vibrant community where you can receive an excellent education while immersing yourself in the true American experience.”
Pauline Heo
Sophomore Pauline Heo brought a unique creative touch to her scholarship submission. Studying political science, she composed an original song paired with an animated video to convey her experiences as an international student.
Pauline saw this project as an opportunity to expand her experience in making music with the significant purpose of sharing her views. “Creating the music was easy, but making the video was a big challenge,” she admitted. To align her visuals with the song, she spent days drawing scenes and crafting animations. The final result was a heartfelt and visually captivating piece.
Winning the scholarship was a milestone for Pauline, who plans to use the funds toward tuition. “IU is a big, diverse, and inclusive community,” she said. “It’s a place where you can expand your worldview and feel supported.” Her advice for other students is simple: embrace the opportunities IU offers and showcase your unique perspective.
The Global Citizen Scholarship shines a spotlight on amazing international students like Ahmed, Maria, and Pauline, whose stories inspire us and make IU such a special place. As Ahmed reminds us, “Being an international student isn’t just about adapting to a new world—it’s about showing the world what you bring to the table. ”
