As the last graduate crossed the stage for this season’s ceremonies, Indiana University took a moment to recognize not only the academic achievements of its graduating students but also the profound impact of individuals who have dedicated themselves to the university community. Among these standouts are the International Student Ambassadors (ISAs) and mentors, representing 20 different countries and diverse academic backgrounds.
These ambassadors and mentors offer firsthand insights into life at IU for potential and current international students, addressing inquiries and sharing their experiences navigating academics and campus culture. Their diverse perspectives enrich the university’s global community, providing crucial support for international students transitioning to life at IU.
Through their dedication, ISAs embody IU’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all students, regardless of background. As we celebrate the achievements of graduating students, let’s also recognize the invaluable contributions of these ambassadors in shaping a welcoming and inclusive campus community at Indiana University.
Why IU?
For Meman Diaby, arriving at Indiana University from Côte D’Ivoire was more than just a journey to study Health Economics; it was a leap of faith into the unknown. Like many international students, Meman faced the daunting task of navigating a new country, culture, and educational system. Motivated to expand his horizons and with family nearby, he took on the challenge of learning a new language and excelling academically at the Indianapolis campus.
“Starting from scratch was not easy,” he says, “but a lot has been positive! I’ve learned a great deal about communication and my ability to connect with others.” It was a challenge that would later inspire him to assist others facing similar hurdles.
Similarly, Pavan Idnani’s decision to enroll at IU Bloomington for Informatics was a testament to the resilience and adaptability of international students. Originally from Bangkok, Thailand, Pavan found himself at a crossroads amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic. Disheartened by the limitations of his remote studies in Australia, he sought a university environment that not only offered academic excellence but also provided a supportive community to weather the storm. In IU, he found just that – a welcoming embrace from a campus that recognized the value of diverse perspectives and embraced the strength found in unity.
Meanwhile, Sanjana Wagh’s journey from Mumbai to Bloomington epitomized the pursuit of excellence and seizing opportunities. With her sights set on IU’s renowned business program at Kelley School of Business, Sanjana’s proactive approach to education saw her navigating college applications early on, ensuring she secured her place in a university that promised both academic rigor and a vibrant campus life. Her transition from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the verdant campus of IU was marked by determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her educational goals.
And then there’s Tom Nguyen, whose decision to attend IU in Indianapolis was as much about proximity as it was about opportunity. With family hailing from Vietnam, Tom found in IU a university that not only offered top-notch academic programs but also provided a supportive network and mentorship opportunities that resonated with him. As an Indiana resident, IU offered Tom the chance to pursue his academic aspirations in Finance while staying connected to his roots, allowing him to become not only a student but also a guiding light for his fellow international peers navigating the complexities of studying abroad.
What They Do and Why
Pavan’s journey into the ISA program began with a simple conversation and a scroll through social media. Like many international students, he was navigating the challenges of finding community and support in a new country. When he stumbled upon the ISA program, it resonated with him – a community built on mutual support and understanding.
“When I learned about their vision, it took me by surprise,” he says. “I thought, ‘This is exactly what I want to do for students like me.’”
As an ISA, Pavan found fulfillment in forging connections and nurturing a sense of belonging among his peers, knowing firsthand the importance of having a support system in a foreign land.
Similarly, Sanjana’s involvement with the ISA program was fueled by her passion for community engagement and content creation. Moving to a new country meant starting over in terms of building friendships and finding her place on campus. When she took on the role of managing social media for the ISAs, it was more than just a task; it was an opportunity to connect with prospective students, share valuable insights, and create a sense of camaraderie among those embarking on a similar journey.
With Tom, becoming a mentor was a natural extension of his desire to support others. Though he’s from Indiana, he understood the challenges his peers faced – from navigating academic requirements to adjusting to a new culture. As a mentor, Tom offered one-on-one guidance and facilitated connections among students, knowing that sometimes, all it takes is a helping hand and a friendly face to make a world of difference.
Finally, Meman’s journey as a mentor was sparked by a recommendation from his advisor. Transitioning to college life can be overwhelming, especially for international students, and Meman saw the opportunity to lend a helping hand to those who might be experiencing similar challenges. Drawing from his own experiences, he embraced the role of mentorship, eager to provide guidance and support to his peers navigating the complexities of studying abroad.

Similarly, Tom’s time as an ISA was filled with monthly social gatherings and team events that have left a lasting impact on him. Whether it was shooting hoops on the basketball court or sharing laughs over a shared meal, Tom valued the opportunity to connect with his peers outside the confines of the classroom.
“I felt accepted ,” he shares. “I easily found a community where I could belong.” These moments of camaraderie not only enriched his college experience but have also allowed him to make a positive difference in the lives of his fellow international students.

From organizing cultural events to providing a listening ear to incoming students, Pavan thrived on the sense of community within the ISA program.

Whether a heartfelt conversation in the hallway or a group outing to explore the city, each interaction reinforced the bonds of friendship and support that defined his experience as an ISA. “ISAs are my group. These people mean the world to me.”
As for Sanjana, her role as a social media manager opened doors to both internal and external connections. From virtual meetups to in-person gatherings, each interaction served as a reminder of the impact she made within the international student community at IU – and within herself.
“Not only have I developed better technical skills through managing our social media, but now I feel trusted and encouraged to share my work, and to guide others in theirs,” she says. “I have learned to be a firm leader but not a harsh leader.”
Greatest Impact
For Sanjana, her greatest impact lies in the connections she forged and the guidance she provided to incoming students, smoothing their transition into college life.
“As an ISA, I was constantly interacting with these incoming students who had the same questions I did,” she says. “I talked with them, and I knew that I was making an impact. It’s hard to describe just how rewarding that is.”
Whether it was offering advice on course selection or organizing meetups to help students feel at home, Sanjana’s dedication to supporting her peers left a lasting impression on the international student community.
Meanwhile, Meman’s contribution to the international student community is best exemplified by his role as a graduate mentor.
