Of the approximately 2,500 projects we completed in 2018, these were among our favorites.
Athletics Brand Book
Otherwise known as the IU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Brand and Uniform Guidelines—this brand book, for the first time ever, gets the entire athletic department on the same page for its marketing, communications, and even uniform design. It also aligns IU Athletics with the IU brand, which is a big win for the entire university. It’s a major partnership with a key unit, and it makes the entire IU brand stronger.
And selfishly, I like seeing our work when I watch the Hoosiers play.”—Keith Roach, Content Specialist
Women of IU Conference
When the Women of IU Conference committee asked us to design a mark and program for the inaugural event, we set out to educate ourselves on the history of IU women. Sarah Parke Morrison, the first woman ever to attend Indiana University in 1867, became our starting point for a concept that is appropriately big, bold, and crimson. The mark incorporates the rays within the IU seal and Morrison’s enrollment year.
Pedestrian Safety Campaign
How do you convince drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists to keep their eyes on the road and each other, without creating another distraction? The Busy Campus, Busy Streets campaign is an effort to remind IUPUI students—and anyone passing through—that IUPUI is a campus full of things to do, places to go, and people to see. The campaign includes skywalk banners on the campus’ two busiest thoroughfares, coffee sleeves, door hangers in campus apartment buildings, orientation fliers, bumper stickers, and pins.
Inspire IUPUI: Johnson Simon
Johnson Simon’s Inspire IUPUI feature showed us there is truly no limit to the talent our students bring to the table. Born with cerebral palsy, Johnson tells the story of how he found art in middle school, brought it to the Herron School of Art + Design, and proved himself in the studio. The video was viewed more than 184,000 times and was shared nearly 2,500 times. Fox 59 also saw the video, sparking interest and influencing the network to do their own story.
Working on Johnson Simon’s story was truly life changing… His smile and laugh are infectious, and he truly inspires everyone he encounters.” – Samantha Thompson, Multimedia & News Production Coordinator
IU Commencement video series
Commencement is a very, very, very, very big deal at IU. We traveled to all seven campuses to interview students from each graduating class, then again to attend their individual ceremonies.
(Note: Trigger alert if you cry at graduations.)
My favorite part of this project was interviewing the students from all the campuses and learning what IU meant to them.” —Molly Brush, Content Specialist
Union 525 Environmental Design
Union 525 is a cowork space in Indianapolis and an incubator for innovation and ideas. Our task was to design wall art for a large, historic, double stairwell in the building that would welcome the larger IU community but also entrepreneurs who may be experiencing IU for the first time. We brought together IU’s alumni reach and paired it with words like “innovate” and “discover” to inspire new ideas.
IU Cinema website redesign
A site befitting one of the best university cinemas in the nation, the IU Cinema website showcases the cinema’s space and films in all their glory. A custom database drives its list of upcoming films and events, as well as its archives, with filters that are useful not only for visitors, but for staff who maintain the databases.
The custom database saves IU Cinema staff an extraordinary amount of time with maintenance compared to their old website.” —Kate Wehner, Information Architect
School of Optometry website redesign
The School of Optometry needed a website refresh that attracted high quality students and helped patients schedule appointments based on their symptoms. Inspired by Warby Parker’s frames quiz, we created a questionnaire that asks patients about the symptoms they’re experiencing, then helps them schedule and prepare for their appointment.
IUPUI 50th Anniversary website launch
User-generated stories and an interactive timeline bring the history of IUPUI to life on its 50th Anniversary Website. We also created a custom banner feature that allows users to toggle between past and present photos of IUPUI. Our favorite part: the breadth of story submissions, from freshmen at IUPUI to staff who have been around since the campus began.
Student Central IUPUI website launch
Student Central IUPUI brought together multiple units from the IUPUI campus to create a website where students can take care of the business of being a student: apply for financial aid, see their grades, update personal information, and dozens of other tasks.
A project with significant ease of life changes under the hood” —Brian Smith, Designer
Resources for marketers
We created three tools to make our marketing colleagues’ lives easier this year:
- A social media avatar generator that creates brand-compliant avatars for your IU social media profiles
- A street pole banner template that helps you create a branded street pole banner to promote a school or department within a small space
- A new image portal with ready-to-use images for every campus, searchable by keyword
