IT Professionals:
Campus Networks would like to make IT Pros and System Administrators aware of an upcoming change regarding DNS on February 24, 2022. While this change is expected to have minimal impact, it is important that you read this information below in case you have any systems affected.
IU’s external DNS servers (dns1.iu.edu, dns2.iu.edu and dns3.iu.edu) have been acting as both internal and external DNS servers for several years due to historical reasons. As Campus Networks is migrating to a new platform for DNS services, the internal roles on the external DNS servers will need to be removed.
Most likely, you will not need to make changes, as this change will not affect any of the following devices:
- those configured for DHCP using a dynamically-leased IP address
- those configured for DHCP using a static assignment with DHCP reservations
- those using static assignments with resolvers configured as documented in the IU Knowledge Base article “DNS name server addresses and client configuration at IU” [1]
However, if you have any devices on the IU network that has the external DNS servers configured (dns1.iu.edu, dns2.iu.edu), you will want to change your settings to those listed in the KB article [1].
After the change on Feb. 24, the external DNS servers will no longer:
- answer recursive queries
- resolve DNS names for the private network
If you have questions regarding DNS, please email noc@iu.edu.
