IT Professionals,
Historically, digital certificates were used at IU to secure email communications, but with newly enabled security features in Microsoft Exchange, they are no longer necessary; see Knowledge Base article About Microsoft 365 security. Digital certificates interfere with and bypass IU’s built-in Office Message Encryption service: About Office Message Encryption (OME).
Following a recent review, the University Information Security Office has identified active digital (S/MIME) certificates associated with approximately 6500 IU accounts.
The UISO will notify users with active digital (S/MIME) certificates and provide instructions for disabling them. Unless users are required by an outside entity to digitally sign their emails with an S/MIME certificate, please ensure that they follow these Knowledge Base instructions: Disable your client certificate.
Thank you for addressing this at your earliest convenience.
