IT Professionals,
As the first step to retire the legacy Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) environment, the Domain Admins and Campus Networks will remove the DHCP configuration for the WINS servers, so that new leases will not include a connection to this service. Windows itself has had no dependency on this protocol since XP/Server 2000.
This change is scheduled to take place at 9AM on Tuesday, August 1.
At this time, we’d also encourage Systems Administrators to remove WINS DNS entries that are hardcoded into system configurations. The Domain Admins will follow up in the future with additional retirement steps.
If any legacy third party systems are discovered to have a dependency on the DHCP WINS solution, please contact the domain administrators at ads-admin@iu.edu for assistance after this change.
