IT Professionals:
On July 28 at 8AM, around 34,000 group accounts will be migrated to the Modern Auth requirement for Exchange Online. These accounts being switched to Modern Auth should not be impacted but account owners were contacted directly by UITS with the message below.
Please note the message below mentions the change is likely to have an impact. This was written in error and sent to roughly half the group owner population. Once the error was caught, the language was updated to verify that none of the affected accounts should lose email access when required to use modern authentication.
A list of migrated accounts can be found here: Modern Auth Migration

Subject: Security update for Exchange Online group account emails and known issues
Greetings,
You are listed as an owner for the following account(s) for which at least one device is accessing the accounts’ Exchange Online email using an older authentication method:
account1 | account2| account3| account4| account5| account6
Microsoft is enhancing security measures for logging into Exchange Online. It’s likely that this change will prevent you or someone who uses email on one or more of these group accounts from accessing the Exchange Online email account when this change occurs on Thursday, July 28 at 8am.
To reduce the chance of losing access, people accessing Exchange Online on one or more of the above accounts should do the following:
- For the built-in email app on iOS or Android, remove the email account profile in the email application, and then re-add the account profile on your device.
- For older mobile devices or third-party mail applications, you may need to configure a new mail application. Microsoft recommends using the Outlook app on iOS and Android for better integration with the Exchange Online environment.
These steps will reduce, but not eliminate, the chance that someone could lose access to the group account email on one or more of their devices. The age of their device, operating system, and mail app they use can still cause compatibility issues with the Microsoft enhancements. Mail remains accessible via the web at mail.iu.edu.
If you have any other questions or issues, please contact your IT Pro or campus UITS Support Center.
Thank you,
The Exchange Administrators and UITS Client Support Teams
