IT Professionals:
In December 2018, Microsoft discontinued its antivirus product for Apple devices. As a replacement, Microsoft provided Indiana University a license to use ESET AntiVirus for MacOS. This license expires November 28, 2020 and Microsoft has shared that it will not be renewed.
As part of our enterprise agreement, IU has licensed multiple Microsoft products which includes Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection for Mac, which is a new product from Microsoft. Defender ATP for Mac is now available to install via Jamf Pro for university owned systems.
Please note that Microsoft Defender ATP for Mac is not the same as Windows Defender. Windows users should continue to use the default Windows Defender product already installed on their systems. Microsoft Defender ATP is not being offered for Windows systems at this time.
To install Defender ATP for Mac via Jamf Pro follow the instructions in “Microsoft Defender ATP for Mac Configuration Guide” [1].
The Microsoft Defender ATP for Mac install process works best through a Mobile Device Management solution like Jamf Pro. We understand some university owned Macs cannot be managed in Jamf Pro. Because of technical limitations we are unable to offer a generalized installer via IUware. Please contact Leveraged Services via sct2@iu.edu for recommendations.
If you would like to onboard your devices into Jamf Pro for rolling out Defender, you may also reach out to us for assistance. Please contact Leveraged Services via sct2@iu.edu with “jamf” in the subject line for expedited routing.
