IT Professionals,
SecureMyResearch is a new service designed to reduce the cybersecurity and compliance burden on IU researchers and the IT Pros that support them. The service is offered jointly by the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) [1], OVPIT Information Security division [2], and UITS Research Technologies [3] in coordination with many other IU stakeholders [4]. It will provide assistance to IT Pros that support researchers regardless of discipline by helping to ensure that the solutions offered to researchers are secure and comply with cybersecurity rules and regulations in grants, contracts, and data use agreements. SecureMyResearch will leverage the combined expertise of IU’s IT Pros and cybersecurity, compliance, and research computing experts to, in essence, “bake security in”, using a new, workflow-based security framework developed by CACR.
SecureMyResearch provides the following services to researchers and IT Pros:
- A Cookbook [5]. A one-stop, self-service resource that provides pre-secured recipes for common research technology use cases; for instance, share documents with IU and external collaborators. The users enter keywords related to what they want to accomplish and see a list of matching recipes. A simple click provides step-by-step directions, following which will ensure that data is secured end to end. Some of these recipes will be pre-approved by IU for critical data, for instance protected health information (PHI) subject to HIPAA.
- One-on-one consulting. A central resource IT Pros, researchers, and others can go to by emailing securemyresearch@iu.edu for help with cybersecurity and compliance, questions such as:
- Can you help us document compliance?
- Can IU provide a solution that meets cybersecurity requirement X?
- Can you help us secure our existing workflows/systems?
- What does this cybersecurity clause mean in our researcher’s grant/contract/data use agreement?
- What does regulation X mean in our specific context?
- Can you review our data management plan/IRB application to make sure we’re secure?
3. Advocacy. To communicate researcher’s and departmental needs to appropriate IU stakeholders, act as ombudsman, to effect improvements to institutional policies and procedures that accelerate research.
Please email securemyresearch@iu.edu for more information or to set up a one on one meeting.
