At the University Economic Development Association’s (UEDA) annual summit, held recently in Anchorage, Alaska, IU Kokomo Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke was elected to the organization’s Board of Directors.
As IU-Kokomo’s seventh chancellor, Sciame-Giesecke has played a leading role in regional partnerships involving education, business and economic growth and research. This includes facilitating discussions for the development of a six-county regional economic development organization, as well as a funding formula, organizational structure and bylaws for the organization.
Within UEDA, Sciame-Giesecke was involved in the development of the organization’s Journal on Economic Development in Higher Education, which is expected to launch its inaugural edition in 2016.
“As an IU regional campus, one of our primary objectives is to be a good ‘steward of place.’ UEDA works to expand economic opportunity in our communities by leveraging research, community resources, campus planning, talent development, and technology commercialization. I look forward to my role on the Board of Directors as we advance the knowledge and practice in economic engagement by institutions of higher education.”

Sciame-Giesecke was also one of three Indiana University officials — along with IU’s Vice President of Engagement Bill Stephan, IU’s Assistant Vice President for Economic Development David Gard — who recently played integral roles in establishing a framework to define the roles that colleges and universities play in modern economic development. The two-year project — taken on by UEDA and the Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU) recently culminated in a joint publication titled “Higher Education Engagement in Economic Development: Foundations for Strategy and Practice.”
