The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent on an innovation to create cells that could improve vascular repair. The innovation was created by Dr. Mervin Yoder of the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Endothelial colony-forming cells are rare cells that have been shown to be directly transplantable into patients. They have been reported to enhance vascular repair and improve blood flow following myocardial infarction, stroke and limb injury. Unfortunately, these cells lack the potential to proliferate in elderly patients or people with peripheral arterial disease.
The IU innovation is a method to generate endothelial colony-forming cells from other types of human cells. The cells in the generated colony have high proliferation potential.
The innovation was disclosed to the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office. The mission of the office is to drive innovation to the market for the benefit of the public, the university and innovators for state, national and global commerce. IU personnel can disclose an invention online.
