Technology invented by IUPUI researchers to improve testing of automobile sensors that recognize bicycles and bicyclists has been awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Automotive companies develop control systems to avoid or mitigate vehicle collisions, including those with a bicyclist. Evaluations of emergency braking systems using an actual bicycle may be problematic. Additionally, a bicyclist’s pedaling motion may affect the performance of some sensors and radar systems.
IUPUI researchers have developed apparatuses that mirror the dimensions of the human body, including a torso and a pair of legs, that replicate the pedaling motion of a human bicyclist. They disclosed their invention to the Indiana University Innovation and Commercialization Office, which protects, markets and licenses intellectual property developed at Indiana University so it can be commercialized by industry.
More information about disclosing inventions to IU ICO and how to license them for commercial applications is available online.
