The Indiana University Council for Regional Engagement and Economic Development, or CREED, addresses regional economic concerns and identifies ways that IU can use its resources to advance economic development efforts in the state. Each IU campus has a CREED representative, appointed by the campus’s chancellor or provost.
Sean Ryan has represented IU Fort Wayne on CREED since its inception. He is director of the Office of Engagement. He was kind enough to answer questions for Crimson Catalyst.
Crimson Catalyst: Why is community engagement important to your campus?
Sean Ryan: We believe that the campus plays a significant role in supporting the regional strategic priorities of economic, workforce and community development in Northeast Indiana. If we have a thriving economy, a well-educated workforce and a community where people choose to live, our region will prosper into the future.
CC: Why is regional economic development important to your campus?
SR: There is a clear link between the economic health of our region and the success of the campus. We believe that our campus plays a key role in supporting the economic success of our region.
CC: What is your chancellor’s vision or priorities on regional engagement and economic development?
SR: In December 2016, the Purdue University and Indiana University Boards of Trustees approved a realignment agreement regarding the governance of the Fort Wayne campus. The outcome will allow each university to focus on its strengths and better meet the needs of the northeast Indiana region and beyond.
CC: How has the region benefited from the campus’s involvement and leadership?
SR: The Northeast Indiana Office of Engagement has existed for 12 years with the purpose of matching Purdue and Indiana University expertise and intellectual property to the regional needs of Northeast Indiana, to enhance economic and workforce development and improve the quality of life for its citizens. The campus engagement efforts facilitates business, industry, government and community partnerships in the region promoting progress in economic, workforce and community development.
CC: What potential opportunities exist for your campus and region?
SR: Following the realignment, both institutions remain committed to serving the needs of the regions as the premier public higher education institutions in the northeast Indiana region. The realignment provides exciting opportunities for growth and expansion in Fort Wayne.
