The name USS Indiana lives on as a nuclear submarine bearing the title will be christened in April 2017, with expected commissioning in 2018. Innovate Indiana is hosting a public reception for personnel of that vessel at the Bloomington campus on Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
U.S. Navy Commander Jesse J. Zimbauer and Master Chief Petty Officer Lafrederick O. Herring will visit Indiana University’s display of the World War II battleship USS Indiana at Memorial Stadium.
The reception will be held at the Varsity Club Suite on the west side of the stadium. Attendees have access to free parking in the stadium’s west lot near the USS Indiana display. Take the stadium press box elevator to the sixth floor for the reception. Scheduled speakers include Zimbauer; Herring; Ray Shearer, chairman of the USS Indiana Commissioning Committee; and Kirk R. White, assistant vice president for strategic partnerships, Office of the Vice President for Engagement, Indiana University.
Indiana University has several educational and research partnerships with the Navy, including STEM education initiatives, educational partnership agreements and a cybersecurity-intensive cooperative research and development agreement with NSWC Crane.
