It’s called EAR — the Emerging Areas of Research Program. And for those who have yet to hear about this latest research initiative at IU Bloomington — yet want to learn more — then be sure to block off noon to 1:30 p.m. on your calendars for Friday, April 15.
That’s when a town hall meeting about the program will take place at Whittenberger Auditorium. There, officials with IU’s Office of the Vice Provost for Research will outline a program that over the next five years expects to award six promising research initiatives about $3 million each over a four-year period with up to three faculty lines per project.
What’s the catch? To be considered for funding, investigators must be ready to embark upon significant and complex — but primarily, fresh — approaches to research in areas that are emerging, novel, or current, yet are in need of support. Unlike the Grand Challenges Program, which is university wide, EAR focuses on the IU Bloomington campus.
IU Bloomington’s investments in the Emerging Areas of Research program are intended to significantly enhance the volume, quality, impact, and reputation of research across our campus. We’ll accomplish this by investing in areas that expand collaboration among existing faculty and provide opportunities for the addition of key faculty.
— Rick Van Kooten, vice provost for research, IU Bloomington
Van Kooten added that EAR’s long-term goal is for faculty members involved in the initiative to serve as world leaders in a specific area of research and/or be recognized for identifying and executing a novel approach.
A one-page abstract for proposed projects is due June 15. Full proposals are due on Sept. 9, with a final selection announcement planned in November.
