Students in the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law have joined Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. offices in Bloomington and Indianapolis as patent law externs.
Sarah Goodman, Brittany Lewin and Brian O’Neill will work under the supervision of Brion St. Amour, general counsel and head of intellectual property, to conduct patentability assessments on invention disclosures from faculty and staff throughout the Indiana University campus system. They also will help draft new patent applications, respond to patent office actions for U.S. and foreign applications, and assist with the submission of patent filing documents.
St. Amour said Goodman, Lewin and O’Neill have proven backgrounds in the academic and professional fields. He said they will strengthen IURTC’s mission to deliver classroom and laboratory discoveries to the marketplace through protection and commercialization activities.
“Researchers in all academic disciplines on Indiana University’s campuses are among the most respected in the world. Their commitment to innovation encourages them to disclose their discoveries to IURTC,” St. Amour said. “We explore all avenues to protect their work and help it reach the marketplace, whether that means creating a startup through our SpinUp program or licensing it to an already established company.”
The externships began Jan. 19 and will conclude at the end of the spring semester. IURTC’s patent extern program is designed for law students with specific interests in intellectual property and provides an opportunity to gain valuable in-house experience with IURTC’s legal team.
