Since its inception in June 2014, about 200 Monroe County residents have taken part in the Bloomington Code School, a free program offered by the Bloomington Technology Partnership (BTP).
The school is designed to help community members learn web development and design skills to fill open technology jobs in the area. Much of Indiana suffers from a “skills gap” in its labor force, with computer and information technology (IT) jobs growing at more than twice the rate (17 percent) of all occupations (8 percent) between 2009 and 2014.
Participants will use Codecademy and Lynda.com to learn basic front-end Web development, JavaScript and jQuery, PHP, or web design — all while receiving guidance from local tech professionals. Participants hail from various backgrounds and coding experience, ranging in age from 19 to more than 60.
BTP is a collaborative initiative of the Bloomington Economic Development Corp. and is funded in part by the City of Bloomington and Innovate Indiana.
