Back in May, the $20 million Mirro Center for Research and Innovation at Fort Wayne’s Parkview Regional Medical Center — funded in part by a $1 million donation by the Mirro Family Foundation — opened its doors. On Monday, a seven-member delegation hosted by Dr. Michael J. Mirro, an IU trustee and medical director of Parkview Research Center, traveled to Fort Wayne to tour the facility.
According to a 2012 article in the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel and a 2015 video about the center, the facility further expands the number of clinical trials (44 in 2012, currently 90) already taking place at Parkview. In recent years, Parkview physicians have taken part in clinical and translational research in collaboration with researchers from Duke University, Indiana University, Harvard University and the Cleveland Clinic. Construction on the Mirro Center began in October 2013.
Among the Mirro Center’s features are:
- Advanced Simulation Labs and Classrooms: The center features three simulation labs equipped with high-fidelity medical mannequins for education and training of clinical personnel;
- Center for Healthcare Innovation: The center will invite collaboration with scientists, entrepreneurs and organizations that are passionate about transforming the delivery of healthcare to develop new clinical solutions;
- Conference Center: A 13,000-square-foot conference center is available to medical, professional and community organizations. It can be configured to seat up to 675 individuals at round tables or nearly 880 in a lecture-style arrangement.
The group also toured the main, state-of-the-art Parkview campus, which opened in 2012 at a cost of $536 million.
