The Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology’s inaugural Innovation Conference at IU-Bloomington is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., April 24 in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. It will feature speakers who cover topics related to commercializing academic research, including how to launch a business through IU’s Spin Up program. Additional topics include overviews of federal programs such as Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants — as well as private investment — that help fund promising startups.
Company profiles for Mapp Biopharmaceuticals and Anagin also will be presented.
San Diego-based Mapp, along with the Scripps Research Institute and other public-private partners, co-developed ZMapp, a drug that gained international media attention in 2014 for its use in treating Ebola patients Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly. Clinical trials for the drug began in February in Liberia.
Anagin is a Spin Up company founded by IU School of Medicine professor Anantha Shekhar and Yvonne Lai, a senior scientist with IU’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in Bloomington. Based in Indianapolis, company is developing a first-of-its-kind treatment to battle post-traumatic stress disorder without producing the debilitating side effects that come with current treatments. Anagin recently won the third annual BioCrossroads New Venture Competition and recently received a $692,706 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health.
