A ceramic alternative to titanium dental implants. Automatic fire extinguishers for race car engine bays. Lighting kits for sports equipment. Water-based paint balls.
Each of these – and more – are examples of products developed by undergraduate students who have competed in the Northern Indiana Innovation Competition, which is set for Nov. 21-22 at Indiana University South Bend.
Organized by the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics, the competition is entering its second year. It is open to undergraduate or graduate students who have completed at least one, three-hour course during 2013 or 2014 at IU South Bend, IU South Bend Elkhart Center, or the Purdue University College of Technology at South Bend/Elkhart. Individuals or teams of up to five students are eligible, provided they meet contest guidelines.
Online entry forms, along with an “innovation description” of 400 words or less, are due before 9 a.m. on Oct. 30. The finals and the awards ceremony are open to the public, with prize money allocated to the bursar accounts of up to three top presenters.
