From the Polis Center website: Established in 1989, The Polis Center is a multi-disciplinary research center dedicated to the study and interpretation of urban communities. The Center has particular interest and expertise in the study of neighborhoods, urban planning, community development, religion, heritage and culture, and education.
One of the Center’s primary areas of expertise is the research, development and application of Geographical Information Systems technology. GIS is an integrative technology and mapping tool used to analyze and compare multiple data sets by specific geography.
Polis is a leader in GIS and web-based media technologies for both community analysis and scholarly purposes. The Center created and maintains the Social Assets and Vulnerability Indicators Community Information System, or SAVI, a comprehensive web-delivered integrated database on Central Indiana. SAVI is one of the largest and most innovative information access and data analysis systems in the United States.
Through its research projects, the Center partners with federal, state and local governmental agencies, not-for-profit organizations, faith-based and community groups, and other organizations. The Center links IUPUI’s research capacities to the needs of urban communities. The Polis Center is a division of IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.
