In 2020, a new and deadly form of coronavirus spread across the globe and took the lives of hundreds of thousands – a pandemic. But COVID-19 is but one of many pandemics that have afflicted humanity throughout its history, each of which bears lessons for how we respond to contemporary and future bouts of widespread infection. Answering the Call of the Health Professions: Pandemic examines the biological, medical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of pandemics. Through in-depth readings and guided discussions, students aspiring to careers in the health professions and related fields will gain insights into the pandemic experiences of patients, health professionals, and communities.

Alzheimer’s dementia is the only disease in the 10 leading causes of death of Americans that cannot be prevented, slowed, or cured.  An estimated 5.5 million Americans of all ages are currently living with Alzheimer’s, which plagues one in 10 people age 65 and older.  Answering the Call of the Healthcare Professions: Dementia examines the physical, psychological, social, economic and spiritual dimensions of dementia.Through in-depth readings and subsequent physician-guided discussions, students aspiring to careers in the health professions and related fields will gain deep insight into the experiences of patients and families with dementia.

Develop the concepts and techniques needed to understand the origins in the laws of physics and chemistry regarding the mechanisms by which our planet has become organized on many scales in space and time. Self-organization is the spontaneous emergence of patterns in the distribution of matter, energy, and other variables without these patterns having been imposed by an external source. These phenomena are so pervasive in the biological, chemical, geological, socioeconomic, and other systems that one is led to the question as to the workings of higher universal principles. This will be explored via a delineation of general principles and analyses of many examples. Students will research a particular phenomenon of interest to them and develop an understanding of the processes and their coupling that underlie the associated self-organization.

The Paranormal Realm is designed to provide an introduction to paranormal entities and ideas, past and present. This is a vast topic, so the course will concentrate on certain areas.

We’ll look at the various types of ghosts and hauntings, and explore the belief in ghosts and poltergeists in ancient times as well as in the present. The course will also investigate the organized belief of Spiritualism in America and the British Isles, which was mostly involved in trying to contact the spirits of departed individuals and had such famous supporters such as Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain. We will also look briefly at the resurgence of New Age Spiritualism in America, and examine Spiritism in Brazil and the Caribbean.

The millennium has witnessed new members of the paranormal realm: Chupacabras, Shadow People, and the Black-Eyed Children. We’ll also look at some of the most recent phenomena, such as the Dog Men and Wolf Men of the upper Midwest, and we may briefly examine the new, ultraterrestrial or trans-dimensional theories of UFO sightings, Bigfoot, Lizard Men, and other weird phenomena.

The course will also include a brief discussion of the new digital ghost hunting (as in shows like Ghost Adventures). Methods of documenting paranormal phenomena will be discussed.

From the student perspective, an interdisciplinary approach can be used to illuminate paranormal phenomena, possibly involving history, folklore, parapsychology, psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology.  This is a ghost-friendly course. The purpose is not to ridicule any sort of belief, but rather to illustrate how such phenomena relate to the rich matrix of human experience.

This interactive course will help you develop important communication skills, build self-confidence, foster creativity and spontaneity, and enhance your teamwork skills in a fun and supportive environment. This is not a performance class. Instead, we will apply the principles of improvisation to our daily lives and personal goals.

Borrowing exercises from the improvisational comedy world (think: Whose Line is it Anyway?), we will work in groups to see how we can apply these acting tools to the classroom, various professions, humanitarian efforts, and our personal lives. We will learn through class discussion, from guest speakers, and by doing theatrical exercises and games. No one will be singled out, and everyone will be able to take off their “mask” and be your authentic self. Whether you have a lot of experience in this area or have never stepped foot on a stage, you will be a perfect fit for this course if you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and trust yourself, your instructor, and your peers.

This course is designed for students to explore the nature of education as a perennial human endeavor, in its myriad historical and cultural forms, including contemporary mass schooling. Three fundamental sets of questions animate the course:

  • Why do human beings educate? How did education evolve along with culture as humanity’s unique adaptive quality? What range of purposes does education seem to serve, and how do those purposes vary according to historical and social context?
  • How and where do human beings educate? What are the variety of educational forms and practices that have been developed by human societies, including modern schools, and how might these change in the future?
  • How and why do modern schools exist, what purposes do they serve, and how do they reflect the political forces and cultural contexts where they function?

In addition to these substantive questions, and the answers provided to them primarily through anthropological, but also historical and sociological research, the course explores these social science disciplines as unique lenses for educational inquiry, and further develops expository writing skills. Beginning with considerations about human evolution and broad changes in forms of human sociality, this course explores the ways that the purposes of education relate to their unique cultural conceptions and contexts, as well as to social challenges that societies have faced historically. The course ends with an exploration of the most salient and pressing challenges facing societies across the globe, and the kinds of educational responses such challenges may require.

As a result of completing course reading and writing assignments and participating in classroom discussions, students will:

  • Demonstrate their familiarity with, and understanding of, a variety of societies and cultures’ means of educating the young
  • Compare and contrast these different cultures’ means of educating, and develop an understanding of the complex relationship between local cultural conceptions of education, the state’s role in adjudicating political forces and providing mass schooling, and the growing influence of global policy actors
  • Further develop their ability to write analytically, critically, and imaginatively about education and culture.

In this course we will examine issues of representations in world cinema and media. From gender to ethnic and racial matters, to political stances that often play devastated effects at the local and global level. We will view and discuss, in detail, numerous (inter)national films, as well as media footage and press news that deal, throughout the decades, with the topics at heart.

What is trauma and traumatic experience? What is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? How does trauma affect the formation of personal and collective memory? How is trauma transmitted transgenerationally? How do literature, film, and art convey traumatic experiences? What is the relationship between the aesthetic “form” and traumatic “content”? In this course, we will study the cultural dimension of the complex phenomenon we call “trauma” and try to understand it better by analyzing theory, literature, film, and visual arts coming from different cultural settings. No prerequisites. All works in English translation.

Coffee is widely referred to as the world’s second most valuable legal commodity (behind oil) and is probably the world’s most consumed legal drug. Beyond its status as such a massively traded product, coffee is central to the lives of most Americans. We drink coffee with both breakfast and dessert. We consume coffee both to facilitate our work and enhance our leisure. We can buy coffee everywhere—from the grimiest gas station to the most high-end restaurant—and what we are willing to pay for it runs the gamut. Within American communities, coffee has come to epitomize both what is quintessentially “local” (the neighborhood coffee shop) and “corporate” (Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts). For many Americans, coffee shops are now default settings for relaxing with friends, conducting business, studying, creating art, and for even being alone. Yet, where does our coffee come from? Behind this everyday commodity is an intricate, expansive, and frequently exploitative network that connects billions of people across continents, nationalities, ethnicities, languages, currencies, religions, geographies, and economic backgrounds. In this discussion-driven course, we will approach coffee from a variety of economic, social, political, food studies, and human rights angles in order to consider the extraordinarily complex role that the beverage plays in connecting lives within global culture.

This course is designed to introduce students to the fascinating and diverse world of law. Through the study of selected judicial opinions in legal cases covering a wide range of important topics – including voting rights and election law, police use of force, sexual and reproductive autonomy, affirmative action, impeachment, immigration, religious liberty, the death penalty, federalism, and other timely issues – the course will illustrate how lawyers and judges use the law to try to achieve results that protect individual and public legal rights while furthering the best interests of society and the ends of justice. The course is intended for any student interested in learning more about law, about how legal decisions are made, and about the impacts of law in society. The course will be taught virtually in Spring 2021, through a combination of asynchronous presentations and synchronous class discussions of judicial opinions and other legal texts. All course materials will be provided free to students via Canvas. No prior knowledge of law is required.
