The power of music to move one’s emotions is legendary, and this topic will be part of our conversations on the music of war and peace. Throughout the semester, we will consider questions such as:
- How/why do artists (musicians) respond to significant events?
- How/why do artists call for social change and conflict resolution?
- How do composers depict and express opinions and feelings through their music?
- How is the composer and/or performer connected to his/her society?
- Are musicians able to impact and effect change through their music?
The course will introduce students to the concept of musical creativity and performance associated with turbulent events and times in human history. The semester begins and ends with twentieth and twenty-first-century classical, folk, and popular music, with a brief backwards glance at historical approaches mid-semester. Goals for the course include raising questions (which may or may not be answerable) about how composers are motivated by war and peace and how they “bear witness” to important events, as well as how they depict events and express feelings musically. Perhaps most importantly—the class will include discussions of whether or not the art of music can make an ideological impact on its listeners and create positive change.
