The New Global Communication is an international communication class designed to help students critically evaluate the accepted wisdom of how to communicate with people of other cultures in an atmosphere of accelerated global communication, and to learn how to create new models of intercultural communication.
Much of the study of international communication has been in the business context, but even academic and other experts overgeneralize. With the great expansion of international business and proliferation of international study programs, a person from China, for example, may be much more familiar with American culture and communication than they might have been ten years ago. Has this changed intercultural communication? Have some people and cultures become truly globalized, or is this perspective an illusion, because in reality people still adhere strongly to their cultural traits?
The truth lies somewhere in between, and the actual extent of change related to Globalization varies widely from culture to culture, organization to organization, and individual to individual. The purpose of this course is to equip students with the critical thinking and research tools to untangle the increasingly complex web of globalized communication.
