***THIS CLASS IS OPEN *ONLY* TO FRESHMAN WELLS SCHOLARS***
This freshman Wells honors seminar introduces students to the concept of media literacy—the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication— and explains why media literacy is a critical skill while also teaching students how to apply the basic practice of media literacy to their everyday media and information consumption and creation. Combining a variety of conspiracy theory case studies with engagement with academic and popular texts such as television, films, and podcasts, and social media, students will first learn—and then practice—the application of critical analytic skills in evaluating and decoding the various messages the media deliver as a method of fostering intellectual curiosity, curating informed decision making, and empowering students in becoming smart, active media consumers and creators.
