CLASS NOTES: COLL (CASE) A&H Breadth of Inquiry credit; meets with SLAV-P 364 and SLAV-P 564
Against a background of postwar Europe, we will study and discuss Poland, a country with arguably, if history is a judge, the most unfortunate geographical position in Europe. From the ashes of World War Two through the communist period until contemporary (sovereign and capitalist) Poland, we will study how writers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, and activists represent traumas and upheavals, cultural revolutions, and evolutions. We will analyze various materials: Cold War propaganda, Solidarity and dissident movement, rock scene and youth culture, cutting-edge performance art, political graffiti with dwarfs (indeed!), and groundbreaking queer literature. Our studies include cult authors and artists, including three Nobel Prize winners in literature.
No prerequisites. All works are in English. Most texts will be provided.
