How has Indiana University constituted its academic community over the past 200 years? What factors influenced the admission of students and recruitment of faculty and staff in different periods? How has the demographic character of IU’s population refracted and reflected the larger demography of Bloomington, of Indiana, and of the United States? These big questions will be addressed within a project-based undergraduate research seminar designed to document existing stories and uncover new ones.
The seminar will introduce the historiography of Indiana University to provide a context for our work. The bulk of the course will be devoted to archival research of primary sources, mainly in the extensive collections of the IU Archives, on student projects. The goal is to produce research papers of lasting quality and to generate blog posts that contribute to IU’s historical record.
