This class investigates the concept of military leadership and its applications to the civilian context. We will start by discussing key concepts of leadership, and we will then move onto case studies from different periods in history, including ancient China, the European Middle Ages, the American Civil War, and recent and ongoing conflicts. For each case study, we will discuss the military elements involved, and the ways those ideas translate to civilian leadership. We will approach our topics by combining readings, discussions, and interactive simulations (of the same kind used by professional analysts). The lessons learned will appeal to students interested in politics, business, management, history, cultural studies, and philosophy.
