In this course we will analyze the concept of exile as an individual (banishment, deportation…) or collective (diaspora, genocide…) event, as well as a personal necessity or choice (migration, relocation…), through written or visual historical and fictional works. We will focus on global and local cultural aspects, concentrating on gender, social matters, and cultural practices, and geopolitical and geo-cultural implications. We will read literary works, political treatises, historical documents and watch films/videos (some video will be in languages other than English but with subtitles).
