This course engages us in an investigation of health and happiness and how to design experiences and places that enhance and sustain the health and happiness of humans, human communities, and the more-than-human world in which they exist. We will study the idea of happiness, how it is defined, and how it might be measured. We will use the concept of leisure as a starting point as many experiences that enhance health and happiness take place in leisure-based settings and industries (Parks, Recreation, & the Outdoors; Therapeutic Recreation; Sports, Tourism, Hospitality, & Event Management, among others). We will thus explore leisure as a significant cultural force in the past and in contemporary life. We will come to understand leisure as a human behavior spanning history and cultures and an essential contributor to public health. We will study its social, psychological, historical, philosophical, economic, anthropological, and geographical foundations and the role it plays in happiness and health. Ultimately, we will understand frameworks for designing leisure-based experiences and places that enhance individual, community, and ecosystem health and happiness…that do good in the world.
