L203 is designed to lead students into a sharper awareness of the structure and nature of language by introducing the nuts and bolts of linguistic analysis. The first part of the course will focus on phonetics and phonology, investigating how languages harness human sound-producing capabilities to signal information. The second part will focus on how to model the syntax (structure) and semantics (meaning) of sentences of English.
