Prerequisite: S280 or Consent of the Department
The main objective of this course is to offer students an introduction to the scientific study of language, through a description of the linguistic structure of Spanish (semantics, morphology, syntax, phonetics, phonology) and how a speaker’s system is influenced and shaped by their social context (sociolinguistics, bilingualism, pragmatics). Additionally, this honors section of Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics will be research-based and data-driven, as students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the investigation of a key question within each sub-field of linguistics. Students will be evaluated on participation/engagement, daily homework and preparation, unit quizzes and individual/group linguistic problem sets and mini-investigations.
