CLASS NOTES: COLL (CASE) S&H Breadth of Inquiry credit
Prerequisites: E201 and MATH M119 or M211
S321 covers the same core material as E321 and substitutes for E321 as a prerequisite for other courses. Credit is given for only one of E321 or S321. The course is designed to introduce students to more rigorous modelling tools in microeconomics that enhance their understanding of individual and firm decision making. The course will include the economics of consumer choice, theory of the firm as related to alternative market structures, and welfare economics pertaining to market failures.
This section of S321 will also include aspects of behavioral economics, with a focus on introducing basic concepts in game theory and the methodology of experimental economics. In particular, the students will participate in active learning decision exercises designed to enhance their understanding of the fundamentals of microeconomic theory related to market institutions and strategic choice.
S321 will be taught as a small section of no more than 30 students by Professor Walker, who is a recipient of the Indiana University “Student Choice Award,” and was the recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences, James P. Holland teaching award. Professor Walker has served as Chair of the Department of Economics and Co-director of the Vincent and Elinor Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis. He is currently the Director of the Interdisciplinary Experimental Laboratory at Indiana University. Professor Walker has taught principles of microeconomics and intermediate microeconomics for over 30 years.
