This course offers a foundation in the principal areas and methodologies of Hispanic linguistics. The main objective is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the tools of linguistic analysis and apply them to the study of Spanish. The course begins with an introduction to the scientific study of language and the unique human capacity for language acquisition. This is followed by a focus on the acquisition of Spanish as a second/additional language. We will continue with an analysis of the Spanish sound system (phonetics and phonology) and the structure of words and sentences (morphology and syntax). We will examine the rich variation that exists in Spanish around the world and briefly explore the study of meaning (semantics and pragmatics). We finish the semester with an introduction to the study of Spanish in immersion contexts abroad. Upon successfully completing the course, students will have the ability to take advanced courses in Hispanic linguistics and a deep understanding of the Spanish language.
