C308 – Roman Law introduces the practice of law in ancient Rome and legal analysis generally. In Spring 2020, the course will focus on Roman water rights and the legal institutions that the Romans used to regulate both private and public water sources, including the aqueducts. While the course centers on the study of legal texts, we will use other written and material evidence to contextualize the law. Studying water law allows us to investigate Roman ideas about the environment, economic activity, and social life. This version of C308 is taught as an intensive writing section and also includes an honors section: in addition to the work in the regular section, students in the honors section will complete an independent research project for presentation to the class.
