CLASS NOTES: Open to Wells Scholars only through Thursday, November 7, 2019; open to Hutton Honors College students by
permission beginning Friday, November 8.
This interdisciplinary seminar will explore the most exciting—and often terrifying—manifestations of life on a dynamic planet. We will examine both the physical processes that produce natural disasters—including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, and tornadoes—and the historical, philosophical, religious, and artistic reflection on these natural disasters’ impact on human society. We will examine how natural disasters challenge the fundamental resilience of societies, and the ways they are linked with human-induced environmental change.
