CLASS NOTES: IUB GenEd S&H credit; COLL (CASE) S&H Breadth of Inquiry credit
Knowing ourselves can seem like the easiest thing in the world: to find out what I believe, what I want, or whether I’m happy, it seems all I have to do is close my eyes and look inside myself. But what if self-knowledge was much harder than it seems? This course will consider challenges from philosophy, empirical psychology, and literature that purport to show that we are unreliable judges of the content of our own minds. We’ll also ask what consequences this would have, if true: how should I organize my life, and what kind of society should I want to live in, if I am bad at knowing my own mind?
