CLASS NOTES: IUB GenEd S&H credit; COLL (CASE) S&H Breadth of Inquiry credit
This course will explore the various ways in which state and federal governments have used or abused power to regulate sexuality and reproduction in the United States. What is the proper role of government with regard to sexual activity, sexual orientation, sexual identity, gender identity and roles, and pregnancy? We will pay special attention to the constitutional protections afforded in those areas, so this course provides a strong introduction to constitutional law. We also will touch upon some of the theories that inform contesting views (based on natural law, major thinkers, political movements, and economic theories). Specific topics will include: legal restrictions on sexual activities, regulation of contraception and abortion, regulation of women during pregnancy, sexuality education, LGBTQIA+ discriminations and protections, and the creation and enforcement of gender roles.
