Topic: Drugs and Society

This course provides an introduction to the study of drug use, drug dependence, drug markets, and drug policy as viewed from sociology and related social science disciplines. Factors beyond the individual are often related to patterns of drug use and drug trends. We will explore these issues in the U.S and abroad through readings, lectures, class discussions, and assignments. The aim of the course is to provide students with tools to develop an ability to analyze current events critically, to apply sociological concepts, and to see the complexity of drug use and social life through a variety of theoretical lenses and perspectives.

- Identify how social contexts shape patterns of substance use on an individual and population level
- Explain how public policy influences substance use and related health behaviors
- Recognize emerging drug trends and changes in patterns of substance use over time in American society.
