A message from your academic advisors:
Would you like to earn IUB credit hours this May for traveling on excursions to visit coral reefs, mangroves, and other terrestrial and marine habitats in the Cayman Islands?
The application deadline for the IUB Tropical Biology Program in Grand Cayman (BIOL-L 433) is January 22, 2024. If you are interested, apply now! You do not have to be a biology major to apply, although you must have completed 2 biology courses or equivalent. For example, BIOL-L 111, BIOL-L 112, BIOL-L 211, BIOL-M 250, and BIOL-M 315 would be appropriate courses for eligibility.
This program provides students first-hand experience diving on some of the best-developed reefs in the Caribbean. The program runs May 7 – May 16, 2024, and will be held on Grand Cayman Island at Ocean Frontiers Dive Resort, ranked as one of the top 10 dive resorts in the world. You do not have to be a biology major or scuba certified to apply, but you do need to be able to swim. Scuba instruction will be available on IUB campus during the second eight weeks of spring semester 2024.
All interested students are invited to an information session on Wednesday, January 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Biology Building Room 123 (the Lieber Room).
Participating students earn 3 credit hours of BIOL-L 433 Tropical Biology. How this counts for you:
- Biology B.A. and standard Biology B.S. – counts as an approved upper-level Biology lab in your major
- Biology B.S. with Concentration in Integrative & Organismal Biology: counts as an approved upper-level Biology lab in your concentration
- Biology B.S. with Concentration in Biology of Disease OR Concentration in Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics: counts as upper-level general elective (like Folklore or History courses, for example). Does NOT fulfill an upper lab in your major; the course does not fulfill any specific major requirement, although the grade counts in major GPA.
- Biotechnology B.A. and B.S. majors earn upper-level general elective credit (like Folklore or History courses, for example; the course does not fulfill any specific major requirement, although the grade counts in major GPA).
- Microbiology B.A. and B.S. majors earn upper-level general elective credit (like Folklore or History courses, for example; the course does not fulfill any specific major requirement, although the grade counts in major GPA).
- Molecular Life Sciences B.S. majors earn upper-level general elective credit (like Folklore or History courses, for example; the course does not fulfill any specific major requirement).

We advisors hear very positive feedback on this program. A Biology major once said this program was the single best experience of her time at IU!
