Join us as we turn campus woodlot(s) back into a native woodland by removing invasive plants and replanting the understory. All necessary tools and equipment will be provided.
10/30
Invasive Species Removal: Crucial for the effective management of forest groves is monitoring the spread of non-native species. Students will try their hand at the hard work of physically removing non-native invasive plants like bush honey-suckle and purple winter creeper that threaten the woodland campus. Attendees will learn from O’Neill professor, Jon Eldon, Landscape Coordinator, Mike Girvin, and other community members on the impacts on invasive species on forest resources, why non-native invasive plants are so detrimental to urban tree health and resilience, and how to identify these plants, so they can be an improved stewards of natural resources in the future.
11/6
Tree Planting: Students will have the opportunity to leave a mark beyond their years on campus by planting tree(s). In addition to planting saplings in small groups, students will learn how IU is monitoring the health of its campus trees, get exposure to the GIS data collection system being used, and pick up proper planting techniques from Landscape Services arborists and other community members involved in urban forest management.
