The Anthropology Department announces a new 15-credit minor in Medical Anthropology.
From the department website: The Medical Anthropology minor provides a cross-cultural and evolutionary/historical perspective on health; methods training that includes ethnographic, statistical, and laboratory skills; and most important, an integrated view of health and disease that encompasses both biological and socio-cultural contributions. You will learn how our ideas about and experiences of health, disease, and medicine are profoundly shaped by evolution; culture; transnational flows of people, ideas, and resources; histories of colonialism and structural inequalities; and the development of new technologies.
The Medical Anthropology minor will provide excellent preparation for students with career goals in any health science field, and for pre-med students to master the social sciences section of the MCAT exam.
Interested? Why not take a first course in the minor and see how you like it? ANTH-B 260 Biocultural Medical Anthropology is offered in Fall 2021 and still has open seats. Course description: A survey of health and disease from a biocultural perspective, which incorporates the evolutionary, ecological, and sociocultural context of health and disease to answer such questions as why we get sick and why there is population variation in the risk of becoming sick. Topics include reproductive, infectious, and chronic diseases.
