A message from Prof. Xindan Wang, IUB Department of Biology:
I’d like to bring your attention to BIOL-S 211, Molecular Biology (Honors), which will be running this fall. It is a small and interactive class with a lab component that is focused on a real research project. The class is open to all majors. If you have questions, please contact the instructor, Dr. Xindan Wang (xindan@indiana.edu).
Here is the full description:
BIOL-S 211 Molecular Biology, Honors (5 cr.).
Lectures: TR 11:30 A-12:45 P; Lab: F 3:00 P-6:00 P
Prerequisite: BIOL-L 112 or BIOL-H 111; and CHEM-C 117. Recommended: CHEM-C 341 concurrent.
Open to students with a 3.30 or higher overall GPA.
BIOL-S 211 will be taught at an honors level. The lectures cover the structure and function of DNA and RNA; DNA replication, mechanisms of mutation repair, recombination, and transposition, mechanisms and regulation of gene expression; the genetic code, transcription, and translation. It introduces bacteriophages, plasmids, chromosome biology, and the technology of recombinant DNA.
The accompanying lab is closely related to the materials taught in lectures. The lab for this semester covers a research project that investigates the function of one bacterial gene studied in the Wang Lab. In this semester, students will clone the gene, express is in bacteria to test its toxicity, and find out the mechanism of its action using fluorescence microscopy. The students will see a research project from the beginning to the end and learn basic molecular biology techniques, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
